iLandscape Trade Show Illinois Wisconsin - Preparations

Whew! Preparations are complete for the iLandscape show this week. Myself and my co-speaker are giving a talk on Landscape Design for Robotic Lawn Mowers. The main purpose of the presentation is to help the landscape architects, lawn maintenance companies and business people understand robot lawn mowing basics: available products, how they work, do's and don'ts of landscape design, etc. And, to emphasize the very few things landscape architects need to know in order to accommodate robot lawn mowers. In other words, robot lawn mowers are easy to accommodate, so why not include accommodations for them now? It is inevitable they will take over here, as they have in Europe, with more robot lawn mowers sold than standard mowers.

My co-speaker, Kate Mack of Mackland LLC, a Certified Landscape Architect and co-owner of the business, did not like the title of our presentation. After discussion, I understood why. We should never design for a machine. Design is for people. Machines don't care about design. I have changed the tagline to: Design for People, Accommodate Robot Mowers. I am very satisfied with the change, and, actually, that's what I meant in the first place.

The popularity of robot mowing has been growing in recent years. The European market is fully mature, with over one million machines sold to-date. This is very good because it accelerated the adoption of important features, like: GPS for theft recovery that cannot be defeated by removing a hidden tracking module. GPS is also used to improve mowing efficiency. This topic and many others, including an overview of the market, and, which robots are perimeter wire-free are covered in our talk.

People in the US seem to have trouble getting their heads around robot mowers. Many people have not heard of them, or, if they have, they dismiss them as a novelty. However, robot mowers have clear benefits and advantages beyond saving time, such as: less chemical and fertilizer requirements, less water usage, increased drought tolerance, reduced thatch buildup, finely mulched clippings (no clumps) and many more.

Lawn maintenance companies are starting to realize that due to increased labor cost and a shortage of workers, robots are the way to go.

During the presentation, Kate will show the MowerMagic video by Jonathan Hall. It is the video he made of the Ambrogio Robot bunker he built for his own property. This is the best hidden base design I have ever seen! And, Kate is bringing her robot for "show and tell" to give the audience a better idea of the size, shape, blade, etc. Her robot is an L300 Elite that has been in service for over four years (and still going strong!).

Learn more about Mackland LLC at their web site. Kate does landscape architecture work for large retail corporations and boutique hotels, to name a few. Mackland also specializes in pool removal. They are well known in the Chicago and Denver areas as a pool removal leader.

And, if you are a #landscapeprofessional that attends our talk, be sure to stop by the Paradise Robotics booth: #519 at #ilandscape2020, January 29-31. https://ilandscapeshow.com/

  1. Hi Kathy, so how did the presentation go, any interest from the audience? Just watched the bunker video on the Mower Magic channel, very inspiring.

    1. Hi, thank you for asking. The presentation was very well-received. The attendees engaged with me afterwards and also at our booth. We added several dealers. One new dealer closed a sale because of the talk so far. I did a similar talk in Michigan at MGIA but the market is different there. Ambrogio was the only brand at the Michigan trade show vs. three brands represented at iLandscape.
